Chapter 25
Despite his best efforts, Gary still couldnât get Clarence to elaborate on why he had been chosen to return to earth. The enigmatic one (or knob head as Gary privately dubbed him) swooped around like a character from The Matrix, one minute there, the next gone. Gary had pressed him on the subject of Marty, to no avail.
âIt is indeed a terrible vicissitude, Gary, but here we must accept that death cannot be prognosticated. The little one is with us for reasons that are difficult to fathom by mortals. As companions, we are constrained to act in accordance with the ancient ways. As I explained before, my role is not to command but to guide.â Clarence did his wavy-hand thing again. Whatever was meant to be on the cards for Marty, he wasnât giving anything away.
Since his first meeting with Marty, theyâd bumped into each other a few times. Or rather, Marty had materialised next to Gary, Grump always safely by his side. Heâd asked if Marty also had a âcompanionâ, but the wee fella had looked blankly at him.
âThere is an old lady who speaks to me sometimes. She says her name is Anna, and she fell off a ladder when she was fixing a lightbulb. Sheâs OK, nicer than Bob. But I donât think theyâre my companion. Maybe you are, Gary?â
Gary wasnât sure what to say. Deep down he was a little miffed that an eight-year-old was amassing more friends than him. And who the heck was Bob? Before he could ask, Marty had fixed him with those beseeching eyes.
âDid you talk to Hattie? Will she go and see my mummy and daddy? Youâre a nice man, Gary, and I know your wife must be a nice lady. My mummy always said that nice people do good things and this would be a really good thing.â
At a loss what to say, Gary had sat down cross-legged and pulled Marty on to his lap. Tears threatened again as he remembered doing the same years ago with Johnny, reading him bedtime stories or watching silly movies together. âOK, mate. First of all, I canât make any promises but if you tell me a bit more about yourself and where you come from, well ⦠letâs just see, eh?â
Marty had beamed at him. âThatâs easy. I know my phone number and my address off by heart. Even the post code!â
